Culture is a part of people’s lives which expressed different ways we tell stories and remember the past. We can explore how past events have influenced and shaped our lives. Hong Kong is transformed from a fishing village to a British colony to the international financial center. “With cities, it is as with dreams. Everything imaginable can be dreamed.” Hong Kong is a legendary place for people to discover its different sides. People, especially children, thinks history is a dry lesson. Hence, there is a series of pop-up cards with AR animation that introduces Hong Kong history in an interesting way.
To inherit the culture of history and environment, people can build their identity in this society. Apart from the advancement and prosperity in Hong Kong, there are many traditional buildings with conservation value worth knowing. Nowadays, there are many different local tours that are open to anyone to experience the other side of Hong Kong, past and present. In this project, Sham Shui Po district traditional buildings, Mei Ho House and traditional tuck store are presented. When participants arrived at this building, they get a popup card. To scan the pop-up card with the Augmented Reality application, they can see the daily life in that building in the past while listening to the tour guide.
" EVERY BUILDING S HAS ITS OWN STORY. . . "
POP UP CARD
Mei Ho House
To rebuild the Mei Ho House building, there are three parts needed to be popped up. The middle one is a rectangle with are connecting two residential wings. There are two columns inside the 180° parallel cube. The front and back walls fold outward. Two residential wings are on both sides of the middle one. It uses the tube concept of the paper mechanisms and transfers kinetic energy from the middle paper model fold to the residential parts of the pop-up.
In Mei Ho House, there are roundabout, airplane olive and hopscotch as the digital object. In the past, there are not much entertainment for kids. Only just simple facilities in playgrounds, roundabouts and hopscotch are the signature facilities at that time. What’s more, the airplane olive is a unique and special activity in the 1960s. Therefore, these three activities will be the digital objects in the pop-up card.
Roundabout is a kids’ game that can be played by pushing or pulling on its handles. At that time, many children were playing together. Some children were standing on the handles while some were laying down on the plate.
Airplane olive is a famous snack at that time. Street vendors will wear a tin box with a Rugby shape full of olive. The snack is shaped like an olive but is made from herbs marinated with salt and licorice. He will shout or sing on the ground. If someone wants to buy the olive, he or she will come out to the corridor and throw the money to street vendors. Then he will throw up the olive to them. However, we cannot see this situation anymore.
Hopscotch is a children’s game that can be played together or alone. It is a popular playground game in which players toss a small object into the check on the ground and then jump to grab the object.
Traditional Tuck store
Some groceries were placed in the tuck store. A vintage robot, toy car, yes card, nostalgic poster, fans and kendama are the 3D objects that would be created finally.
Yes cards became popular among teenagers in the 1970s. As usual, yes card is the pop star on the front and the relevant information of the pop star or a lyric on the back. Many teenagers loved to collect cards which are their favorite pop stars.
Tin toys very popularly since the 1960s as long as almost every child owned one. There are many different themes in the tin toys such as animals, space and transportation. Robots are the most popular tin toys at that time. Therefore, robots will be created in this project(Fig.15). Apart from tin toys, plastic toys are also popular toys due to the cheap price. The phone is not common and expensive at that time. children are keen on owning one this phone toy car was very popular at that time too. Kamdama is a traditional toy come from Japan. To play with Kindama, there is a rule that many children would like to compete with others. It is challenging and cheap, thus this toy was popular in Hong Kong at that time.
For the paper mechanism of the tuck store, it is more complicated than Mei Ho House. This is because this is a corner pop-up card that has three sides. To create the fridge freezer, it is a 90° parallel fold which is the most basic pop-up with a wing tab to lock two sides of the paper. On the other side, there is a wood shelf and yes card machine. They are both in a rectangle shape and the paper mechanism is the same. Self-locked box paper model will be used in them. In the middle of the pop-up card, there is a folding table. There are two pieces of paper to be the legs of the table with wing tabs supporting the tabletop. The clock is the last pop-up object. There is a small square box on the back to pop up the clock. The hour hand, minute hand and pendulum can be moved by the users. To enhance the interaction experience with users, there are some pulls and tabs. On the fridge freezer, there are some ice pops and drinks after users open the door. The wood shelf door could be pulled to show the box of snacks.
